Fuels for Heating and Transportation

TSSA provides services to help industry members operate safely with heating fuels and meet legislative and regulatory standards.

The Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) provides services to help industry members operate safely with heating fuels and meet legislative and regulatory standards. TSSA also reviews applications to install liquid fuels (gasoline, diesel, propane, and natural gas) facilities designed for fueling vehicles.

These reviews determine a facility's compliance with the Technical Standards and Safety Act, 2000, as well as with industry regulations and adopted safety codes. Contractors registered with TSSA are responsible for ensuring that installations comply with related safety regulations and standards.

Variance approvals

TSSA may grant variances from regulations and adopted safety codes and standards in situations where the use of other methods can still ensure fuel safety. These variances allow flexibility in the use of designs that do not strictly comply with current regulations but do not compromise safety.

Variances are required when designs deviate from the applicable code and installation manual:

Variance review services are charged by the hour. For more information on how to obtain a variance review, please contact TSSA’s Customer Contact Centre toll-free at 1-877-682-8772 or by email at customerservices@tssa.org.

Equipment field approvals

An equipment field approval focuses on uncertified equipment and appliances that are custom-made, built on site, or produced in limited numbers.

It includes a review of the design, along with inspection and verification of the equipment’s fuel safety features at the point of installation.

If the equipment complies, a TSSA approval label will be applied to the equipment.
